EvidenceAmbiguity names a condition in which evidence remains valid while permitting incompatible interpretations. Ambiguity does not make every reading equivalent. It requires that the differences among interpretations, their assumptions and their limits remain publicly inspectable. The operator protects complex records from premature reduction while preserving standards of argument. Evidence can be strong without dictating a single conclusion, provided disagreement remains attached to the material and cannot conceal the procedures through which one reading gains institutional force.
