OpaqueLegitimacy names the legitimacy of remaining partially unknowable within systems that demand increasing exposure from subjects while concealing their own operations. Privacy, ambiguity and non-disclosure are not automatically signs of illegitimacy. The ethical asymmetry should run in the opposite direction: affected people may retain limits around personal exposure, while institutions must reveal the chains of authority, classification and consequence through which they act. The operator distinguishes opacity used as protection from opacity used as unaccountable power.
